Located in the north central part of Spain, the Rioja region has an ancient wine-making history, with origins dating back to the Phoenicians. The region has a total of 57,000 hectares cultivated, yielding 250 million liters of wine annually, 85% of which is red. The wines differ greatly, however, depending on what varietals are used to produce the wine, as well as the effect of aging in oak casks.

We'll explore all facets of the wines from this region as Lisa Carley, a representative of the Spanish Trade Commission and brand ambassador for their Vibrant Rioja program, comes to Chicago to present to us. We'll try 5-6 wines (maybe more!) as we enjoy light appetizers in the loft home of one of our members.

What a great first meetup to choose! Thanks very much to all for the fine conversation and especially to Hertha and the others who organized and helped. Clearly this is a group of people worth knowing! (I actually haven't found that Sam's coupon yet, though I did poke around the Web site Lisa pointed us to. The thrill of the hunt's half the fun!)

Another great one. Lisa, a representative of the Rioja region, did a wonderful job leading the tasting which included whites, roses, and reds from Rioja. She had a great selection of wines to taste and showed expertise in both wines and the methodology of tasting. Heartha, our organizer, again prepared some her great food items specially paired with the wine selections. Of course, the conversation and company were outstanding.
